Belize Cave Tubing Zipline and Xunantunich Ruins from Placencia and Hopkins

Belize Cave Tubing Zipline and Xunantunich Ruins from Placencia and Hopkins

Some 120 miles on paved highway, north from Placencia among the northern foothills of the Maya Mountain Range, is one of the fabled Kingdoms of the ancient Maya, called XUNANTUNICH (Shoo-nan-too-niche), meaning “Maiden of the Rock”. Your air conditioned tour van will be rolling along the Hummingbird Highway  through first, the mountain terain of Belize, and then the George Price Highway gradually making its way through rolling hilly countryside, past the New Capital City of Belmopan, along Creole and Meztiso Villages, passing the Mennonite community of Spanish Lookout with their beautifully kept farmlands, past one of the three large cattle ranches of Belize (Running “W” Ranch), through San Ignacio/Santa Elena, twin towns of the Cayo District and across the Macal River, and finally to the southern banks of the Mopan River; cross over by hand operated ferry, and move to XUNANTUNICH, a mile uphill, with lush tropical rainforest on either side of the road and at the site. Take a guided tour across grassy plazas, marvel at the perfect architecture of El Castillo, one of the three largest Maya Temples of Belize, and the largest structure on this site, standing 130 feet above plaza level, with its reconstructed East and West friezes representing Gods of the Maya and several inner chambers; move through other temples and courtyards where once Kings, Queens and their elite carried out special ceremonies honoring a pantheon of gods of a fantastic cosmological religion which reigned supreme in Mesoamerica for several thousand years. After you of Xunantunich we reboard your van and head back along the George Price Highway to “Jaguar Paw” Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Reserve you hub for the remainder of your tour.

We First head to the ziplines, where we gear up with proper safety equipment and your guide delivers the orientation on the zips and safety procedures after which we are off on the shortest of our lines the “Chicken Run”. This is just to give you an idea of whats ahead and what to expect. After you finish the zips its off to the parking lot and bathrooms to change. (Note: We can do lunch now or after the cave tubing it’s up to you the guests and can be decided in route from Xunantunich. Your guide will ask.)

After changing into water appropriate we gear up with life vests and helmets with headlamps your guide will give you a brief orientation to safety and cave tubing, he will do this again in more detail at the entrance to the water.

The Belize cave tubing part of the tour is now officially underway. An invigorating forty five minute hike through well constructed jungle trails takes visitors deep into the heart of the Belizean wilderness to experience all the unique sights and smells of the rain-forest ranging from the shrill squawks of nesting parrots to the rare glimpse of a gibnut, fox, or deer amidst the lush undergrowth. A number of mysterious dry cave formations will also be encountered along the way to where the trail meets a gaping cave mouth engulfing the shallow jade tinted waters of the Sibun River. It is now time to enter the intriguing underworld of one of Belize’s most complex river cave systems; sit back and relax as the gentle currents casually glide the flotation tubes through a series of shadowy caves where mysterious shapes traverse every angle and the crisp chilly air and earthy aroma create a prevailing mood of isolation and relaxation. After forty five minutes, the tubes exit the cave system and embark on a leisurely thirty minute journey through the heart of the rain-forest where colorful vegetation, an array of tropical birds, and other native wildlife including various species of primates and small critters dominate the sloping riverbanks.
After your cave tubing tour, we head back to the bathroom facilities, dry off and change into dry clothes. We re-board your transportation and head back to Belize City return to the start point, your hotel, AirBnB, water taxi or municipal airstrip.
